Electromagnetic Crane Prototype

A compact working overhead/gantry crane that uses a DC electromagnet to pick up and drop ferrous pieces (nuts, plates, billets). It demonstrates electromagnet design (coil, core, force vs. current/air-gap), power electronics (MOSFET + flyback), hoisting mechanics, and safety interlocks—perfect for diploma/degree demos.

Parts Used:
  1. Structure – Mini gantry/bridge frame with trolley rails; end stops & bumpers
  2. Travel Mechanisms
  3. Hoist (Up/Down): DC gearmotor + drum & wire rope (or belt) with limit switches
  4. Cross Travel (X): Trolley on wheels with DC/BLDC/stepper drive
  5. Long Travel (Y, optional): Bridge drive on rails (or build as jib crane)
  6. Electromagnet Assembly
  7. Core: Low-carbon steel/soft iron E/I or solid round slug with pole face (100–120 mm dia typical)
  8. Coil: Enamel copper wire (AWG 16–22), wound to target R ≈ 1–4 Ω
  9. Face Plate: Machined flat pole with chamfer; thin rubber pad to reduce shock
  10. Thermal: Epoxy potting + ventilation holes; temperature sticker/NTC
  11. Power & Drive
  12. Supply: 12/24 V DC (10–20 A) SMPS or battery + fuse/MCB
  13. Electromagnet Driver: N-MOSFET or relay + flyback diode/TVS; PWM for strength control
  14. Motor Drivers: H-bridge/ESC for hoist/trolley; separate fuses
  15. Control & Sensing – Joystick/rockers, E-stop, hoist upper/lower limits, current sensor, optional load cell, tilt/IMU (overload/anti-tip)
  16. Cable Management – Festoon/drag chain, spiral cable, connectors
  17. Accessories – Keeper plate (for demagnetization assist), hook/clevis, guards, LED status

TECHNICAL SUPPORT

Advantages:
  1. Multi-disciplinary – Electromagnetics + power electronics + mechanisms + safety.
  2. Safe pickup – No hooks around sharp edges; great for small plates/scrap demo.
  3. Variable grip – PWM lets you feather the hold for aligning parts before release.
  4. Educational metrics – Show force vs. current, air-gap effect, thermal limits.
