Mini Lathe Machine Fabrication

A Mini Lathe Machine is a bench-top precision tool for facing, turning, drilling, boring, and threading small metal and plastic parts. This build covers bed/slideway fabrication, spindle design, bearing preload, power transmission, feeds & speeds, and safety—excellent for diploma/degree students to demonstrate real machining capability.

Parts Used:
  1. Bed & Base – Welded steel/cast bed with box/dovetail ways, chip tray, leveling feet.
  2. Headstock & Spindle – EN8/EN24 spindle with tapered-roller bearings, 12–20 mm through bore, pulley/backplate.
  3. Chuck & Workholding – 80–100 mm 3-jaw self-centering chuck, faceplate, centers; optional 4-jaw independent.
  4. Drive System
  5. Option A: 0.5–1 HP AC induction motor + V-belt + step pulleys (guarded).
  6. Option B: 500–1000 W DC/BLDC + PWM/VFD for variable speed + tachometer.
  7. Carriage Assembly – Saddle, cross-slide (gib adjustment), compound slide (±45°), 4-way/quick-change tool post.
  8. Leadscrew & Apron – 8–12 TPI (≈3–4 mm pitch) leadscrew, half-nuts; optional power longitudinal feed.
  9. Tailstock – MT1/MT2 quill with handwheel; lateral offset for taper turning; drill chuck/live center.
  10. Controls & Electricals – NVR switch, Emergency Stop, FWD/REV, fuse/MCB, motor controller enclosure.
  11. Accessories – Steady/follow rest, splash guard, LED task light, mist coolant (optional), DRO scales (optional).

TECHNICAL SUPPORT

Advantages:
  1. Hands-on Machine Tool Design – Bearings, alignment, metrology, power transmission.
  2. Real Capability – Produce accurate bushings, shafts, spacers, threads for other projects.
  3. Compact & Portable – Bench-friendly footprint with guarded drive.
  4. Upgradable – Add DRO, quick-change tool post, threading dial, power cross-feed.
  5. Safer – NVR + E-stop, belt guard, interlocks (optional), clear operating SOP.
  6. Cost-Optimized – Uses off-the-shelf bearings, belts, and standard fasteners.
