Welding Fume Extractor

A Welding Fume Extractor is a portable filtration unit that captures smoke, metal fumes, and odors directly at the welding source. Using a high-suction blower and multi-stage filters (spark arrestor → pre-filter → HEPA → activated carbon), it protects users and keeps shops clean. This project demonstrates airflow design, filtration, motor control, and safety—ideal for diploma/degree students and fabrication labs.

Parts Used:
  1. Frame & Enclosure – Sheet-metal cabinet with access doors, acoustic lining, and caster wheels with brakes.
  2. Suction Arm & Hood – 75–100 mm dia flexible arm with flanged hood; magnetic hood option for hands-free placement.
  3. Centrifugal Blower – 0.5–1 HP AC motor (or BLDC) delivering 250–400 CFM (≈ 425–680 m³/h) at the hood.
  4. Ducting & Seals – Smooth bends, quick clamps, and gaskets to minimize pressure drop and leaks.
  5. Filter Stages
  6. Spark Arrestor (metal mesh) – Stops hot particles before filters.
  7. Pre-Filter (MERV 8–10) – Traps larger dust.
  8. HEPA H13 – Captures fine fumes/particulates down to ~0.3 µm.
  9. Activated Carbon Tray – Reduces odor and gases.
  10. Controls & Power – 230 VAC input, MCB/fuse, VFD/PWM speed control, Emergency Stop, indicator LEDs.
  11. MonitoringDifferential pressure gauge/sensor for filter-clog alert; optional airflow (anemometer) readout.
  12. Safety & Grounding – Earthing, insulated wiring, high-temp hose, and internal baffles.
  13. Optional Add-ons – Auto-start with welder current sensor, hour meter, filter life counter, dual-arm splitter.
