The Geneva Mechanism is a widely used indexing mechanism that converts continuous rotary motion into intermittent rotary motion. It is called the Geneva mechanism because of its early use in Swiss watchmaking. The mechanism consists of a driving wheel with a pin and a driven wheel with radial slots.
When the driving pin enters a slot on the driven wheel, it rotates the wheel by a fixed angle, and between engagements, the wheel remains stationary. This makes it ideal for applications where precise, step-by-step motion is required.
A Geneva Mechanism Demonstrator is an educational project that visually explains this principle and helps students understand indexing, motion control, and mechanical timing systems.
