Impact Testing Machine (Charpy/Izod)

A pendulum-impact tester to determine the impact energy absorbed by a notched specimen during fracture. The machine releases a calibrated pendulum that strikes the specimen (either Charpy—simply supported, or Izod—cantilever clamped). The loss in pendulum height/angle gives absorbed energy, and impact strength is computed from the energy per unit area at the notch. Ideal for studying material toughness, notch sensitivity, and ductile–brittle transition..

Parts Used:
  1. Pendulum Hammer & Shaft: Calibrated mass with interchangeable energies (e.g., 50/150/300 J)
  2. Release & Latch Mechanism: For repeatable drop from a fixed angle (typ. ~150°)
  3. Anvils/Supports:
  4. Charpy: Two supports (span typically 40 mm) for a simply supported specimen
  5. Izod: Vise-type clamp to hold specimen as a cantilever
  6. Striker (Knife Edge): V-notched impact tip (replaceable; specified radius)
  7. Angle/Dial or Encoder Display: Reads initial & post-impact swing angles/energy directly
  8. Friction/Empty Swing Correction: Brake and correction scale/algorithm
  9. Safety Enclosure & Guards: Transparent shield, interlock (recommended)
  10. Optional: Low-temperature bath/oven for DBTT studies; specimen centering gauges; verification blocks

TECHNICAL SUPPORT

Advantages:
  1. Direct toughness measure: Energy to fracture, comparable across materials
  2. Fast & repeatable: Simple setup with quick specimen changeover
  3. Versatile: Both Charpy and Izod in one frame (combo rigs)
  4. Educational & industrial: Demonstrates notch effects and temperature dependence
  5. Standards-ready: Accommodates standard specimen sizes (e.g., per ASTM/ISO)
