Beam Deflection Apparatus

A bench-top rig to measure deflection of beams under known loads and verify Euler–Bernoulli beam theory. Interchangeable specimens (steel, aluminum, brass) are tested with different support conditions (simply supported, cantilever, propped). Deflection is read by a dial gauge/LVDT at specified points while loads are applied through calibrated hangers/weights. From the measurements, students determine Young’s modulus EE and compare theoretical vs. experimental deflection curves.

Parts Used:
  1. Specimen Beams: MS/Al/Brass strips (known b,h,Lb, h, L) with end holes/slots
  2. Supports: Knife-edge/roller blocks for simply supported, rigid clamp for cantilever
  3. Loading System: Point-load hanger(s), calibrated weights; movable along span
  4. Deflection Measurement: Dial gauge (0–10 mm, 0.01 mm) or LVDT + indicator
  5. Scale/Ruler: Graduated base to position load and gauge precisely
  6. Frame/Base: Rigid, level platform with anti-slip feet
  7. Optional Instrumentation: Multi-point gauges, Arduino/DAQ for plotting y(x)y(x)
  8. Accessories: Spirit level, Allen keys, clamps, safety stops

TECHNICAL SUPPORT

Advantages:
  1. Quantitative & visual: Direct measurement of elastic deflection under different supports
  2. Concept validation: Confirms EE, II, load cases, superposition
  3. Flexible: Swap materials, thickness, span; move load position easily
  4. Accurate: Low-friction supports and fine-resolution gauges
  5. Teaching-ready: Quick setup, clear graphs, and repeatable results
