Cycle-Based Corn Sheller

A human-powered machine that shells maize cobs using a bicycle pedal drive. Pedaling spins a shelling drum against an adjustable concave grate; kernels are rubbed off and fall through a screen to a collection tray while empty cobs exit from the end chute. A flywheel smooths motion and a freewheel prevents kickback. Ideal for off-grid farms, SHGs, and small agri-entrepreneurs.

Parts Used:
  1. Pedal Module: Bicycle frame section with crankset, pedals, bottom bracket
  2. Drive Train: Chain + sprockets (ratio selection), freewheel, optional V-belt stage
  3. Flywheel: 3–6 kg for steady torque
  4. Shelling Drum: Mild-steel drum with rubberized/knurled/pegged surface
  5. Concave/Grate (Adjustable): Curved perforated plate; clearance lever
  6. Sieve/Screen: Separates kernels from chaff; removable for cleaning
  7. Hopper & Chutes: Top feed hopper; kernel outlet; cob discharge chute
  8. Bearings & Shafting: Pillow-block bearings, keyed shaft, couplings
  9. Frame & Guards: Welded MS frame, chain/belt guards, dust hood (optional)
  10. Bins & Bag Clamp: Kernel tray or bagging spout; cob collection bin
  11. Optional Add-ons: Tachometer, dust extractor port, alternator for light/phone charging

TECHNICAL SUPPORT

Advantages:
  1. Off-Grid & Low Cost: No fuel or electricity required
  2. High Throughput vs. Hand Shelling: Consistent output with less fatigue
  3. Low Kernel Damage: Adjustable gap and rubber lining reduce breakage
  4. Easy Maintenance: Bicycle parts + simple fabrication
  5. Ergonomic: Seated pedaling with flywheel smoothing
