Hybrid solar and wind energy system

A small off-grid/backup power plant that blends solar PV with a micro wind turbine on a shared DC bus + battery, feeding a pure-sine inverter for AC loads (or a DC load rail). Wind smooths nights/monsoons; solar covers calm, sunny hours. Great to learn MPPTs, rectification, charge control, dump loads, and energy budgeting.

Parts Used:

1.Solar Side

  1. PV array (e.g., 1–2 kWp) on tilt rack
  2. MPPT solar charge controller (24/48 V battery)

2.Wind Side

  1. 3-phase micro wind turbine (300–1000 W) on guyed mast 8–12 m
  2. 3-phase rectifierbuck/boost MPPT (wind)
  3. Dump/diversion load + braking switch (crowbar) for overspeed

3.Shared DC & Storage

  1. Battery bank (LiFePO₄ preferred) 24/48 V with BMS
  2. DC bus bars, fuses/MCBs, DC disconnects, surge protectors (SPD), combiner box

4.AC Out & Controls

  1. Pure-sine inverter/charger (1–3 kVA)
  2. System controller/HMI (SOC, power flows), shunt/wattmeter

5.Balance of System

  1. Earthing/lightning protection, mast guys & anchors, cable glands, UV cables
  2. Weather station (wind, irradiance, rain) for logging (optional)

TECHNICAL SUPPORT

Advantages:
  1. Complementary sources: Wind often peaks at night/monsoon; solar in clear weather.
  2. Smaller battery / better uptime: Hybrid reduces deep cycles and genset use.
  3. Teaches systems thinking: MPPTs, rectification, SOC, dump loads, siting, and protection.
  4. Scalable: Parallel PV strings, taller mast, second turbine, or grid-tie hybrid inverter later.
