Mini Belt Grinder

A Mini Belt Grinder is a compact bench-top machine for deburring, beveling, shaping, and sharpening metal, wood, and acrylic. It uses an endless abrasive belt running over a drive wheel, platen, and idler/tracking wheel. This project blends mechanics (belt tracking & tension), power electronics (variable speed), and safety design (guards, spark control). Perfect for diploma/degree students and makers.

Parts Used:
  1. Base Frame & Mount – Rigid steel/aluminum frame with anti-vibration feet.
  2. Motor – DC/BLDC (150–1000 W) with PWM controller or 0.5–1.0 HP AC induction motor with VFD.
  3. Drive Wheel – Aluminum/rubber-coated wheel mounted on motor shaft/coupler.
  4. Idler/Tracking Wheel – Spring-loaded tensioner with tracking screw for belt alignment.
  5. Contact Wheel (Optional 4″–6″) – For hollow grinds and contouring.
  6. Platen – Hardened steel/ceramic wear plate for flat grinding.
  7. Work Rest/Table – Adjustable and tilting (0–45°) for precise angles.
  8. Belt – Common sizes 1″×30″ or 2″×48″; grits from 36 to 1200 + Scotch-Brite.
  9. Electricals – Main switch, Emergency Stop, fuse/MCB, wiring, IEC inlet.
  10. Dust & Spark Control – Guard, spark arrestor, and dust port for vacuum.
  11. Add-ons – Small wheel attachment (10–25 mm), bevel jig, LED task light, tachometer.

TECHNICAL SUPPORT

Advantages:
  1. Hands-on Learning – Mechanics, belt dynamics, material removal, and motor control.
  2. Versatile – Switch belts to go from heavy stock removal to mirror finishing.
  3. Precision & Control – Accurate tracking, flat platen, and tilting rest for clean bevels.
  4. Compact & Portable – Bench-friendly footprint with quick belt change.
  5. Safe Operation – Guards, e-stop, insulated wiring, and controlled sparks.
  6. Customizable & Scalable – Upgrade motor power, add VFD/PWM, jigs, and small-wheel arm.
  7. Efficient – Target belt speed 10–25 m/s (≈ 1000–5000 SFPM) for common tasks.
