Pneumatic Water Pump

A compressed-air–driven water pump you can build in two student-friendly ways:

  1. Variant A: Airlift Pump – Inject air at the bottom of a riser; bubbly mixture becomes lighter and rises, lifting water with no moving parts underwater.

  2. Variant B: AODD Pump (Air-Operated Double Diaphragm) – Compressed air alternates two diaphragms via a spool valve to draw and discharge water; self-priming and solids-tolerant.

Parts Used:

Common (both variants)
  1. Air Compressor + Tank (3–8 bar), FRL (Filter + Regulator + Lubricator)
  2. Pressure Gauge, Relief Valve, Ball Valves, PU Hoses & Quick Couplers
  3. Flow Control Valve, Silencer/Muffler, Mounting frame & clamps
Variant A — Airlift Pump
  1. Riser/Lift Pipe (PVC/SS, Ø 20–32 mm)
  2. Air Injector (tee/nozzle) near pipe foot
  3. Submergence/Foot Section with strainer
  4. Discharge Line + optional non-return valve
Variant B — AODD Pump
  1. Dual Diaphragm Pump Body (DIY acrylic/Al plates + rubber/PTFE diaphragms)
  2. Air Spool (5/2) with Pilot Valves (or off-the-shelf AODD head)
  3. Inlet/Outlet Manifolds with ball/seat check valves
  4. Suction Hose (foot strainer) + Discharge Hose

TECHNICAL SUPPORT

Advantages:
  1. No electrics in water (both variants) → safer in wet/hazardous areas.
  2. Airlift: Zero submerged moving parts, handles sandy/silty water.
  3. AODD: Self-priming, can run dry, pumps viscous/dirty liquids, easy throttling.
  4. Great learning: pneumatics, multiphase flow (airlift), valve timing & checks (AODD), energy balance.
