Portable Table Saw

A Portable Table Saw is a compact, bench-top cutting machine designed for accurate ripping, cross-cutting, and bevel cuts in wood, MDF, acrylic, and similar sheet materials. The blade is driven by a high-torque DC/BLDC motor and mounted below a flat table so the workpiece can slide safely along a fence or miter gauge. This project covers mechanical design (table, guides, transmission), electrical systems (motor drive, PWM speed control, e-stop), and workshop safety (guards, riving knife, dust control). Ideal for diploma/degree students building a functional fabrication tool for labs and prototyping.

Parts Used:
  1. Base Frame & Table Top – Rigid platform (aluminum/plywood) with removable throat plate.
  2. Saw Blade (4″–6″, carbide-tipped) – Performs ripping/cross-cutting.
  3. Motor & Mount – 775/795 high-torque DC/BLDC motor (or compact AC motor) with adjustable bracket.
  4. Power TransmissionDirect coupler or belt & pulley set to reduce vibration and tune RPM/torque.
  5. Speed Controller (PWM) – Variable speed with soft-start for smoother cuts.
  6. Power Supply – 24 V DC SMPS (10–20 A) or Li-ion battery pack; main switch, fuse, and wiring.
  7. Rip Fence & Rail – Parallel guide with lock and micro-adjust for straight cuts.
  8. Miter Gauge & Slot – For angled cross-cuts up to ±45°.
  9. Riving Knife / Splitter – Prevents wood from pinching the blade and reduces kickback.
  10. Transparent Blade Guard – Safety shield and chip deflection.
  11. Dust Port / Vacuum Adapter – Connects to vacuum for cleaner operation.
  12. Emergency Stop (Mushroom) – Instant power cut-off.
  13. Anti-Vibration Feet & Carry Handle – Stability and portability.
  14. Push Stick & Featherboard – Safer material feeding.
  15. Fasteners, Connectors & Cable Management – Assembly hardware and neat wiring.

TECHNICAL SUPPORT

Advantages:
  1. Hands-on Learning – Integrates mechanics, power electronics, and safety engineering.
  2. Precision & Repeatability – Clean, accurate cuts with adjustable fence and miter gauge.
  3. Compact & Portable – Small footprint; easy to carry to workshops and demos.
  4. Customizable – Supports jigs (sled, dado, circle-cut), blade swaps, tachometer add-on, LED/laser cut-line.
  5. Low Cost – Uses off-the-shelf components and a 24 V low-voltage drive option.
  6. Safer Operation – Guard, riving knife, e-stop, and push stick minimize risk.
  7. Scalable – Upgrade motor power, table size, or add closed-loop speed control and dust enclosure.
