The Quick Return Mechanism is a mechanical system designed to make the return stroke of the shaper’s ram faster than the cutting stroke. This saves time and increases productivity in metal shaping operations. It is widely used in shaping machines, slotting machines, and other reciprocating tool machines.

This mechanism can be implemented using crank and slotted lever arrangement, Whitworth quick return mechanism, or hydraulic systems depending on design preference.

Parts Used:

1. Crank Disc – rotates continuously to provide motion
2. Slotted Lever / Linkages – transmit crank motion to the ram
3. Ram / Slider – holds the cutting tool and moves back & forth
4. Frame & Base – supports the assembly
5. Bearings & Bushes – reduce friction for smooth operation
6. Motor or Hand Crank – drives the crank rotation
